Do you have a summer list?  I’m still checking things off, but one of the things that’s still to be done?  Mini-golfing!

I’ve always loved mini-golf, and as I was looking around for cool places to mini-golf, I discovered that our childhood course (Par-King, pictured above) is featured on just about every top ten list I found!  Who knew?

Since I’ve been doing a lot of daydreaming this summer, I’ve decided to imagine myself a little mini-golfing outfit.

As I’m working on this post, husband says, “you really want to go mini-golfing, don’t you?” Ha.

Just a little summer fun for the weekend!  What’s still left on your summer list?

My husband is part fish – ergo, we spent a great deal of our beach vacation underwater.  And what water this was!  Not to mention the bluest of blues, it was the perfect temperature (as in, not freezing – I have a low tolerance for cold water).

We did several snorkeling outings during our vacation – there was nothing very near the resort where we stayed.  One day we walked down the beach about 30 minutes to a protected reef (you could only snorkel around a roped-off area so it was hard to see much) and another day we took a boating excursion out to a few different dive spots.

Here are a few of my favorite snapshots:

Being underwater is a bit like what it must feel like to be in outer space (Cory’s description, and I thought it was an apt one), it’s a whole different world down there!

Drat, now I’m going to have the Little Mermaid soundtrack playing in my head all day.

Sorry, guys.

One of my favorite parts of summer in Colorado is all the spontaneous weekend adventures we have – like this one we took up Buena Vista for a night of camping and a day of hiking in the Collegiate Peaks.  Actually, I should say that Cory hiked – he knocked two more fourteeners off his list, reaching the summits of both Mt. Belford and Mt. Oxford in one day!  I, on the other hand, did some reading and relaxing in town.

One of my favorite things to do when I need to relax and clear my head is get out for a run – so when I saw signs for Buena Vista’s River Park, I wandered over to check it out.  And I’m so glad I did!  It was the perfect spot.

The Arkansas River Trail, as the sign called it, runs right along the (big surprise) Arkansas River and they’ve made little white water areas for people to practice with their kayaks.  I ran from one end of the trail to the other and it was about 1.75 miles round trip, including Whitewater Trail which branches off the Arkansas River Trail in a loop and allows access to the kayak areas.  My main goal was to stay as close to the river as possible!

There were several other trails that branched out from the other side of the river (across the bridge above) but since I only had about 20 minutes before heading to pick up Cory, this shorter trail was just about right.  Plus, I stopped about a million times to take photos – it’s one of my biggest problems, especially on new trails, I am majorly distracted by the scenery.  But then again, I’m not trying to win any medals, just get some sunshine and some time to think.

There were quite a few people out and about on the trail and in the river – but I loved how the rocks and trees made it feel secluded and secret.  I love those patches of green than make you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, even though the town was just a short walk away.  Something about the silence of the water and the wind that is good for you.

Over all, Buena Vista surprised me as a town much more full of people and activity than I anticipated.  I’m glad we were able to get away for the day and visit!

I was introduced to these two via the music video above, which looks like it was a total blast to make – this song (and their whole EP Gemini actually) has been on pretty constant rotation this summer : it’s fun and playful and well, summery.  Not sure how exactly to explain that!

Do you have favorite “summer songs?” Would love to hear some of your favorites – weigh in below!

Two weekends ago, Cory and I got away to celebrate a few amazing accomplishments with good friends (I’m thinking someone should take the bar exam every summer just for the vacation excuse – no?) and for some much needed R&R.  We ended up in Turks & Caicos, an island neither of us really knew anything about – but we’d use our passports and be able to swim, which pleased both me and the mister, respectively.

This trip was a bit of an anomaly for me, usually vacations involve loads of research and hardly a minute of sitting still upon arrival.  Our time in Turks was much more spontaneous – our friends picked the island and we did, by our standards, very little study in advance.  Also, we did lots of sitting (it was lovely).  Aside from a few walks along the beach to a snorkeling spot and a restaurant, and a day trip on a boat, we didn’t leave the resort.  A lot of that had to do with the crazy expensive cab fares ($11 per person per one way trip?!) and a lot had to do with the fact that we’d both been going going going and needed a bit of nothing.  All in all, I was happy for the change.

1 & 2. We stayed at the Sands at Grace Bay – which was beyond expectations and had the coolest pool ever.  Also, I love tropical foliage.  Nice change of pace from pine trees and aspens.

3.  We didn’t see Jojo, nor did we hear the bell – though Cory did see a shark!

4. Our view from a hammock where we napped one afternoon.  Glory.

5 & 6. One day we took kayaks out and dove for sand dollars.  That was probably one of the coolest things.  Note:  Sand dollars = extremely fragile. Can’t even tell you how many we broke!

The light at sunset was so amazingly golden and the sand was some of the softest I’ve ever felt.  Our ritual of evening walks was even more special these few days.

I am so grateful for the time spent away – husband and I both returned home much more refreshed.  It’s amazing how we de-prioritize and devalue rest in our crazy busy everyday lives, and yet rest is one of the most vital things to being able to live out a properly prioritized and valued life.

So, what did I learn in Turks & Caicos?  Well, I learned to embrace messy hair and bare feet.  And I learned that restfulness is a choice (you book up every spare second of your day – no one forces that upon you) and that probably sanity would be much more easily maintained if I remembered that more often.
