Such a pleasant surprise from our little adventure to Durango was meeting Adam and Carrie – two members of the band Mighty Tempest, all the way from Ireland!

Above is the cover of their single, Sparrows – so pretty.  Their songs are so catchy – I was humming pieces of them for days and days after the concert.  So here’s a video of an acoustic version of Sparrows (just to clear up any confusion – the video says Four Kicks, and they’re now Mighty Tempest – I didn’t post a video of the wrong band!).

I could just listen to them talk all day long!  And the harmonies, harmonies make me happy.  Perfect little mellow music for a case of the already-nostalgic-for-the-weekend Mondays.

If you liked the song, check out their Facebook page where you can here more!

I have been on the hunt for a sequin skirt for a few months, and it has actually been quite an ordeal, but I finally found one that I love and it has come home to live with me.  My birthday is coming up next week, and I thought that would be a good occasion to debut the sparkle!  BUT, here’s where you, my lovely readers, come in.

I’ve got a few ideas for how to style my shiny new skirt, and now I need some input!

Should I go bold with lots of bright colors?

Should I pair it with textural neutrals and let the sequin be the statement?

Or should I dress it down and keep it simple?

Oh the possibilities!  I’d love for you to weigh in – which styling is your favorite?

Go all out with colors!!!! Pretend it’s a neutral and wear the colors with it! Besides… it is for your birthday… so anything goes! 🙂 I recently got a little bit crazy and bought bright coral shoes, so now I’m working on how to incorporate pink shoes into my wardrobe.ReplyCancel

I like the 1st and 2nd options. It would depend on the event which one I would go with tho. -TReplyCancel

The bolder the better… plus, red is a birthday colour. Happy almost bday – enjoy your sparkles.ReplyCancel

Thanks for your input, ladies! I think the first option is the winner 🙂 Husband’s taking me to try a new Greek restaurant and I am super excited! I’ll post an outfit photo soon so y’all can see how it turned out…thanks again!ReplyCancel

Yesterday, there was free cake in the break room at work (as there often is) and, breaking with my usual tradition, I decided to grab a slice.  I was dismayed upon closer examination, however, that the small piece I took was made up almost entirely of icing.  I scraped most of it off.

When I was a kid, it seems like I would always angle for the biggest corner piece (more icing) with the biggest rose (even more icing) as to maximize my sweet icing exposure.  But now, as an adult, I find myself seeking a much more cake-heavy balance.  Unfortunately, what comes intuitively to me regarding cake seemed to be escaping me where it matters much more.

Talk about perspective – check out this post on Makeunder My Life – it really rang true for me today.  More icing is not what fixes a mediocre cake, rather it is the quality of the ingredients and the care of it’s maker that really make a good cake great.  You most likely know this if you’ve had an awesome sister (in my case) make some delicious homemade concoction verses the cavity-inducing boxed cakes offered in most supermarket bakeries.

In this internet-happy world where we can see everyone’s best sides (and where people’s worst sides are mercilessly picked over), it is tempting to fall into the thoughts that more shoes, a better decorated house, a fancier camera, tighter abs, more streamlined organization will surely make us feel better about life and about ourselves.  But all this “stuff,” though it may seem pretty – is not what will sustain you.  It may taste sweet, but in the end, it’s just sugary fluff.  Jess says it so well, “peeling back the layers of our lives leads to the most happiness – not adding to the layers.” This is how life shines, and how you actually get to appreciate the cake you’re eating.  Lately, I’ve been craving way too much icing, forgetting the simple intentions I set for myself just a few months ago, and sometimes find myself struggling to be grateful for what I have and where I am.  Right now.

But it’s never too late to change your perspective.

I decide to value the substance in my life, the quality ingredients and the care of my Maker.  The relationships, peace, good health, service and devotion that are cultivated inside and are what really bring flavor to life.  Things money can’t buy, and that can’t be captured in a photograph.   Because no more can shoes, pillows, or gadgets cure an empty heart than icing can cure a bad cake.

Thanks so much for sharing my icing epiphany! I’m happy to hear I’m not the only person who is trying to love cake a bit more these days… : )ReplyCancel

Oh Annabelle – thanks for sharing your insight and wisdom. The way you summed up the fluff and substance of life in this post reflects a theme in my life at the moment. Now 3 months into a 9 month travel adventure, I’m starting to realise that there needs to be much more cake in my day (perhaps not literally as I had cake for brekky this morning) and less icing. I’ve already stripped back the stuff, with a house full of things packed away in Australia, three outfits in my pack and a new home everyday, but I feel there is still so much potential to peel away the sugary coating and get down to real life. Perhaps it is more time with people, as you suggest, rather than just sights. You’ve prompted a great chat between Dave and I about what we want from the rest of our year, so thanks!ReplyCancel

You are so welcome, Nic! Your story is really inspiring, and something I dream of doing someday 🙂 Seems like its a constant battle, or really a series of day-to-day choices, to keep protecting what is really important – glad I’m not the only one.ReplyCancel

Another group we saw in Durango at the Winter Jubilee with Annie Brooks is SHEL: four sisters named Sarah, Hannah, Eva and Liza from Fort Collins, Colorado.

Above is their latest EP and they have their first full-length album coming out this summer! Thrilled for these girls – there’s no question about their musical talent (way up there, for serious), their lyrics have just the right amount of whimsy, not to mention they are some of the sweetest ladies you’ll ever meet.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogw15jdM_Yc]

Take a listen to today’s soundtrack – SHEL does a cover of “The Battle of Evermore” by Led Zeppelin.  If you ever have a change to see them play live – do it! Their energy on stage is amazing, and being sisters gives such a fun dynamic to their performances.

They have a free download of their song “Ruby Slippers” on their homepage right now, and here’s the rest of their music on iTunes.  These super-creative and talented ladies are always inspiring me to think outside the box, make my music more interesting and to have a little bit of imagination.

Cory and I have visited Durango several times, and it remains one of my favorite Colorado destinations, perhaps as much for the quaint old city charm as for the lovely company I find there.  It’s about a six hour drive from Colorado Springs, and an infinitely better drive when there’s no snow involved.  Last year we drove out on a snowy weekend in February and crossing the two mountain passes with icy road conditions lengthened our drive significantly – also making it much more…interesting?  In any case this past weekend boasted totally clear skies and made for a relaxing and beautiful drive.

Our friends Annie and Jake (re: this post) were hosting a benefit concert called the Winter Jubilee, which has precipitated our visit the last two years.  I love listening to other talented musicians, especially live, and never fail to be completely inspired.  In addition to Annie, two other bands played the concert series: a fun group all the way from Ireland called Mighty Tempest and the dynamic quartet of sisters called SHEL. (Today’s Soundtracks posts to come on both of them!)

We also spent a fair bit of time meandering up and down Main Street, exploring the shops and eating some delicious grub – I highly recommend the pastries at Jean-Pierre’s, we stopped in there each morning for hot chocolate and cream puffs.  Cream puffs could be the nicest breakfast ever invented.  Bottom photo is the tasty wood-stove-pizza from Fired Up.  I won’t go into detail about all the stuff we ate – but if you’re interested in reviews, you can check out my Yelp profile.

It was such nice weather while we were there that we took a walk down the Animas River Trail, which runs parallel to Main Street – we just walked in the direction of the river from downtown and found a little path that connected to the trail in an Albertson’s parking lot.

And of course, walking down Animas River Trail is where we discovered the swing sets that I had so much fun with! I couldn’t resist posting just a few more photos.

Well, now I wish I was heading back next weekend.  I supposed I can find some swing sets here in the Springs to keep me busy, right?

It’s a beautiful world out there, find something to explore this week!
