You may have noticed a few changes around the blog today, I decided to tweak the design a bit so that there was some cohesion across all my web presences.

I’m not by any means a professional designer – but inspiration came from the lovely photographs Lauren King did for me (see more of them here).  So dreamy – if you ever have a chance to drag a piano into a field, I highly recommend it!  The first page I put together was my landing page:

Tweaking that design to where I liked was super easy – even with no coding experience (yay!) thanks to the awesomeness that is Flavors.  I thought it was about time that everything felt like it went “together” so hence the facelift here, and the twitter page got a few minor tweaks as well:

Now all three feel much more like they belong to the same person.  I’m really happy with the changes, and I hope you like them too.

I can’t resist playgrounds.  Swings are one of my most favorite things.  While we were in Durango last weekend, we stumbled upon this set and, of course, I had to stop and play for a while.

So thanks to that swing set, I have a real life outfit photo for this Fresh Friday post!  But of course, we didn’t leave the sketch out either.

Tights with shorts is such a fun thing because you can pretend it’s way warmer than in is, though admittedly it was quite lovely this day.

There are some things I hope I never outgrow, like swing sets, and frisbees, peanut butter sandwiches and coloring books.  There’s something about that child-spirit that makes life much, much better.

This past weekend was such a fabulous little vacation (more on that to come) but I thought I’d share a little bit of the reason we made the drive.  Her name is Annie; and if I had a girl crush, she would probably be it (don’t get mad Jake, promise I won’t steal her!).  Not only is she adorable:

But she paints adorable things:

And she writes thoughtful and lovely music (that, of course, have adorable music videos to go along with them):

Cory and I drove to Durango for the Winter Jubilee, an awesome series of concerts and workshops for a great cause:  encouraging kids to participate in music, learn musical instruments, and to eventually establish a complete music and arts program at a local school.  This was our second year going, and has been so much fun and full of inspiration both years.  So proud of them!

So Annie has been my soundtrack lately, as well as an all-around inspiration as I make a little more effort for CREATIVITY this year.  Check out more of her music and download it here (I highly recommend Up, Up, Up: instant mood-lifter for when one encounters a less than satisfactory day) and her photography business with hubby Jacob here (the blog is full of so much goodness!).

P.S. Jake and Annie, thank you for being excellent hosts and lovely friends! Miss you already.

If there’s one recognizable feature of the Colorado Springs landscape, it’s Pike’s Peak.  Birthplace of “America, the Beautiful” and towering over the city like a colossal guardian (and, in fact, protecting us from the brunt of most gloomy weather – redirecting things north or south and keeping us relatively dry in its shadow).

I’ve been to the top a few times, both in the car and on the Cog Railway – and I’d say they both have their benefits.  My husband plans to hike the mountain this spring, but I’ve yet to decide whether I’ll attempt such a feat or not.

I love that even in the summertime, you can find towers of snow next to the tracks.  Although the journey in the train can get tedious  (the humorous conductors get notably less humorous after a few hours) it is beautiful to sit and enjoy the views without driving.  If the ticket price is off-putting, look on their website for coupons, and keep in mind that driving will use more than a half a tank of gas – I’d recommend filling up before heading up.

If you drive, of course, it’s nice to be able to move at your own pace – stopping for pictures as often as you want, and sitting at the top for as many famous cinnamon donuts as you please.  And hiking, well, that must at least win you some sort of medal for all that effort.  Whichever way you choose, the views from the top are worth it:

I love mountains because they remind you how big the world is – am I the only one who sometimes gets caught up in life’s complications, only to realize later they weren’t so important or monumental as I had given them credit for?  Places like this, 14,000 feet up in the sky, remind me that things aren’t as overwhelming as they appear when I’m analyzing them under a microscope.  The big picture is just as important.

It’s always a good reminder that we’re bigger than our problems and the world is much bigger than ourselves.  If you don’t have mountains to climb, where do you like to go to get a better look at the big picture?

It’s that time of year where thoughts of spring start floating in my brain, but the realities of winter will keep me bundled up for a few more weeks.  So I’ve been experimenting with putting some seasonal bounce into my cozy winter wardrobe – here are a few ideas I’ve come up with:

Layer a cute summer dress over a longer wool one; cozify it with a sweater, tights and boots.

(Necklace: Premier Designs, Sweater: American Eagle, Chevron Dress: Target, Grey Dress: Gap, Tights: Target, Boots: Zara)

Layer cozy cords in a bright fun color with a thick winter sweater and a light, springy plaid top and some snow-safe sneakers.

(Sweater: JCrew hand-me-up from sister, Shirt: American Eagle, Cords: Gap, Shoes: Converse)

I am definitely sick of winter weather, and I have a hunch I’m not the only one.  Hopefully this gives you some ideas to make March and April (those teasing temperature-indecisive months) a little more exciting, while still keeping nice and warm.

Oh – we all wish for what we don’t have! Here in Sunny Gainesville it’s already in the 80s. I had very little chance to wear my boots this winter. And I love my boots…ReplyCancel
