Alt Night Outfit Crop_Mintz

It’s my final Alt recap post! I thought I’d give you a peek at what I wore for this high-fashion-friendly conference. The conference was so busy that outfit photos just did not happen every time, so I put together some sketches for you. The top 3 outfits are what I wore during the day, while the bottom three are what I wore at night. It was so much fun going through my closet and picking out what I was going to pack (I love packing!) and I was able to manage taking only two pairs of shoes (Naturalizer flats + Toms wedges) + alternating between two bags: a clutch for evening + a bigger bag for the day sessions. I really made an effort not to go crazy buying new stuff – I asked for a few goodies for Christmas + the rest is made up of seasons-old favorites that I’ve been wearing + loving for a while. I think it’s so important, even if you’re dressing a step-up from your usual style level, to stay true to who you are! And for me that means comfy + colorful.

This conference really challenged me with how I’ve been dressing day-to-day as I work from home. I realized I’d become really lazy (pajama pants all day every day, let’s be honest) and that definitely needed to change! I feel more confident + ready to get down to business in a really great outfit, don’t you agree? So here’s to kicking it up a notch.

How would you describe your signature style?

Outfit details (minus shoes + bags mentioned above):

Day outfit 1: American Eagle Cardigan (old), Gap elephant print shirt (old), JCrew necklace (old), Madewell jeans.

Day outfit 2: Anthropologie dress, Old Navy leggings + tall socks. (I would wear this outfit EVERY DAY, for real.)

Day outfit 3: Zara blazer (old), Target top, Gold necklace (gift), Madewell jeans.

Night outfit 1: Madewell zebra sweater (old), Asos sequin skirt (old), Gap tights.

Night outfit 2: Green necklace (gift), Aritzia dress.

Night outfit 3: JCrew cardigan (old), Target dress, gold belt (old).

I love how you did sketches of what you wore! I must have thought about my outfits for weeks before the big dates arrived… easier said than done. I’m like you, easily staying in pajama pants or gym clothes all day if my schedule allows. It was fun to pull myself together and “get dressed” though. Thanks for linking up! 🙂ReplyCancel

Thanks Amy! I’ve always loved doing little outfit sketches 🙂 Haha gym clothes are definitely the second offenders around here if it’s not pajamas. Thanks for hosting the link-up!ReplyCancel

I had a little extra time on the Saturday after Alt Summit before my plane left Salt Lake, and I decided it would be a shame to leave having never actually explored the city at all. Thanks to some tips from a friend, my roomie Erin + I took a little walk around downtown to see the City Library + grab pastries at a French café.

Walking SLC_Les Madelines_Mintz

Les Madeleines: they have tea lattes (above, a vanilla Earl Grey) AND eclairs, so really, what more could you ask for in life? It was a great little spot to decompress after a very full weekend and chat over our goals + takeaways from the conference. Salt Lake actually reminded me a lot of Denver, with just a dash more small-town vibe, even downtown. It has lots of parks + cute little neighborhoods, so perhaps that was the similarity I was sensing.

On to the library: seriously one of the coolest libraries I’ve ever seen. Glass walls and ceilings let in a crazy amount of light, and you get amazing views of the mountains from pretty much the whole place. Now this would be a good spot to study. The floors get progressively quieter as you ascend, but the lower levels are pretty loud of a library – plenty of talking allowed. SLC Library Interior_Mintz

I love how the building feels so airy and open – how all the walkways, staircases + elevators are out in the open so you can appreciate the building from wherever you are. There are so many great nooks to read or work in; I know I would probably be here all the time if I lived nearby. (If only they let you sip hot chocolate too, then it would truly be perfect!)

At the very top of the library, there’s a rooftop deck – amazing, right? It was closed for the winter but I can just imagine sitting out there in the summertime with a book + that view.

If I’m honest, I probably would have never thought to visit Salt Lake City on my own. I’m really glad that I ended up there, though, because not only is it a super cheap + super fast flight from Denver, but I enjoyed the small taste I got of this city so much. Now I’m definitely going to have to return for a longer trip!

I know y’all are probably sick of hearing about Alt Summit, but I wanted to share a few snapshots from the amazing decor from the Friday night mini-parties. Clearly, the Secret Garden was my favorite decorated room – are those huge paper flowers not the best thing ever? and the lion with the floral crown?! Seriously. P.S. Those two gorgeous ladies in green are my roomies, Erin + Jennifer.

These parties came at the end of a really high energy weekend + talk about sensory overload having 12 different themes to choose from in one evening! I’m so thankful for everything I got to experience at this conference + for all the fun we had. For the new connections I made with local + far-away friends. So I thought I’d share a few takeaways I had from the conference overall to take that spirit of inspiration, fun + collaboration home with me.

1. Surround yourself with people who inspire you + are excited about what you’re doing (+ vice versa).

2. Incorporate a little pretty into your day – whether with a new water bottle (I love mine + it makes fluid intake so much more exciting…ha) or a bright red lip or a scented candle.

3. Stay true to who you are. Some people won’t like it, but you’ll be amazed at how many love you for it.

4. Every night is a good night for a party (so don’t forget to live a little in the midst of all the hustle).

So there you have it, some good life reminders from Alt Summit. I’ve been incorporating them more + more into my life this year + I can see how much the little things lift my spirits. But today it doesn’t take much because it’s Friday! How are you going to live it up this weekend?

Joshua Tree Title_Mintz

One of the highlights from our Californian vacation back in January was definitely our visit to Joshua Tree National Park. I’ve been wanting to visit the park since I saw it featured in a Runner’s World Rave Run a few years back. I thought the landscape was so unique + I always love finding new trails to explore. When I found out it was only about an hour’s drive from where we were staying in Palm Desert, I knew we had to make the trip.

This land used to be home to cattle hustlers, homesteaders + Native Americans. Secret pastures + watering holes were hidden among the rock formations. I would have loved to camp here, tucked in with the history + the rocks, to watch a sunrise or two.

I will say this: the visitor’s center was sparse, and there is no food or water available in the park (plus super limited cell reception) – so make sure that if you’re planning on hiking to bring your own food + plenty of water. Safety, folks! It was definitely in our favor that it was winter, so the sun wasn’t nearly as hot as it could have been, but I’d imagine this landscape to be pretty brutal in the summer. No need to allot much time for the visitor’s center, just swing in to grab a map + an extra bottle of water then head straight to the park.

Most of the trails in the park are about a mile long, which makes it easy to hike from several points in the park on the same day. We did loops at two different trailheads, along with a drive up to Keys View, the scenic viewpoint where you can look down over the San Andreas fault, along with Palm Desert + all its neighbors.

I was amazed by how many different languages we heard in the park (at least four)! Since Joshua Tree isn’t exactly high on the radar of most Americans, it surprised me to see so many international tourists. I suppose it’s probably because of the proximity to Los Angeles, which makes it an easy day trip for visitors? Anyway, I’m always down for a little linguistic eavesdropping so it was a pleasant surprise!

It was really fun to hike the the Cap Rock Trail, the one from the Runner’s World feature that inspired me to visit in the first place. It was an easy + flat half-mile hike, but you got up close to the rock formations and namesake trees. I’m happy to say that it lived up to my expectations (although this trail is a long drive from pretty much anywhere for only a half mile run) – absolutely beautiful.

Joshua Tree Close-up_Mintz

If we had more time, we would have driven through the whole park to see the natural arch, the cactus gardens and some of the other features that were farther into the park. Since we just had an afternoon, we kept the visit fairly short + all in one area, but I still feel like we got a great cross-section of what this park has to offer. Surreal landscapes, rock formations + unique desert flora.

Joshua Tree Sunset_Mintz Although we left the park before sunset, it was amazing to watch the sun fall behind these trees that lined the highway on our drive home.

There’s something about a drive through the desert, isn’t there?

  • Bespoke TravelerFebruary 5, 2014 - 12:30 pm

A drive through the desert is always an amazing experience, plus there is something so surreal about looking up at the sky through the bristles of the Joshua trees!ReplyCancel

Right? I totally get why these trees are so iconic. They’re really unlike anything else 🙂ReplyCancel

quotable keep exploring

Today’s quotable comes from the Alt Summit keynote with Garance Doré. Garance reminded me, among other things, that if you want to inspire others, you need to stay inspired yourself! Keep on learning. Keep on trying new + different ideas. Keep on exploring. Makes life a little more exciting, doesn’t it, when you have a new project to work on or a new skill to learn? What do you have planned for this week?

Happy Monday lovelies, here’s to another adventure!
