Excuse me while we do a little throwback to the summertime…I found these photos from our trip to Chicago in August and it was such a lovely memory of an afternoon that I couldn’t let these photos collect dust until next summer! We’ll just declare it a little indian summer since I’m so behind. You can totally just declare indian summers into existence, can’t you? Even in October?

In any case, these were taken at one of my favorite spots in the city, near Lincoln Park Zoo. The day we took these photos it was actually pretty cold for August and I was wearing a sweater all day, but for this little sliver of time the sun came out in perfect fashion and warmed everything right up. I love the view of the skyline from this spot, the fact that the zoo is free (!!!), and that there’s a perfect bridge to sit on and soak it all in for a minute or two or sixty.  Cory and I contemplated stealing a cavalier puppy (sorry, sweet cavalier owner, it’s nothing personal – you just have the cutest dog) while sitting on said perfect bridge. It’s a good place to talk about life – even the overwhelming stuff (or the questionable-ethics puppy-stealing stuff). That’s probably why I love the city so much: you never get the sense that you’re alone, there are bunches and bunches of other people all figuring out life around you too and that fills the air with a lot of energy and potential.  Of course, some might argue that’s just the constant traffic buzz, but I like the other idea better. Out of all the places I’ve been in the world, this one is at the very top of the list. Sweet home Chicago, indeed.

When I first came across artist Brittany Powell, I instantly fell in love with her “Native Dress” series. Animals all dressed up in the traditional patterns of their native countries…how perfect is that? What a creative and beautiful project – you should definitely head over to her site and check out all the other cuties in this series. Brittany also offers custom watercolor illustrations from your travel photos! I love seeing creative combinations of the passion for travel and the passion for art – this project definitely checks all the boxes.

What’s inspiring you today?

For the last few weekends, I’ve tracked the leaf-changing colors here in Colorado and we’ve made drives up into the mountains to check it out. Peak season is over now in most of the state (at high-altitude, it only lasts a week or so!) but there is still plenty of awesome fall glory to enjoy.  So if you’re planning on taking a trip to see the changing colors, whether here in Colorado or somewhere else, here are a few of my favorite essentials that would pack well, fall road trip style.

1. So this guy isn’t exactly a necessity for a leaf-watching drive, but he is totally awesome in every way and would look great on the wall – am I right?

2. I snatched up this ridiculously cozy flannel last week and am totally smitten. Everybody needs some fall flannel and it’s perfect for an adventure into the mountains to check out the changing colors – a light layer that’s still warm and cozy.

3. It’s that time of year when things get drier and especially in Colorado, the cooler weather means you need a little extra moisture. I love J.R. Watkins, and this hand lotion is citrusy and travel-sized! Definitely adventure-qualified.

4. Another quintessentially fall staple for me would be the moccasin – ideal for walking through crunching leaves, putting your feet up on the dashboard and aspen forest adventuring.

5. And of course, what scenic drive would be complete without a way to capture all the memories? This little camera is on my wishlist.

We went to this farm last year, much later in the season. This year, we hit up Happy Apple in late September and it was actually great timing: we hit the end of the u-pick raspberry season, the pumpkin patch, and the apples! The apples were already off the trees, but they had plenty in boxes in the farm store ready to take home.  Not to mention plenty of the delicious apple cider which is some of the best I’ve had – that in itself is worth the drive.

We went on this little day trip with our good friends Aaron + Heidi, which started here at the farm and wandered to a few other stops in the Cañon City area (including this winery).  Overall it was a beautiful fall day in Colorado!

There is nothing quite like eating raspberries right off the vine. Even though it was late in the season, with some determination we could find good ones. And the plus side of going early was that we had the pick of the patch when it came to the pumpkins. Last year it seemed there was only a few to choose from, but it was later in October when we made our trip down there.

Maybe it’s because fall always seems to fly by so dang quickly, I find myself really trying to savor every second and squeeze as many things into our weekends as possible. Because the air is so crisp and the colors are so perfect and there is so much out there to enjoy. We had some snowflakes fall this morning, which is not uncommon by now in Colorado – but I’m holding out for a few more perfect days of flannels, cider and crunching leaves. It’s days like these with good friends and great weather that make me tremendously thankful for life. There are days that seem tremendously long in the frustrating way, the why-can’t-things-just-work-out way, the misunderstandings and tedium of adulthood way. But then there are at least equal amounts of days that you wish last forever and ever and are never quite long enough. Days like this where the stars align in the life-is-awesome way, and the this-couldn’t-get-any-more-perfect way. This was definitely one of those.

This past week has been one of those weeks – the October weather has been perfect in every way, there are beautiful RED trees on our street that have me swooning every time I leave our apartment. It’s funny, I’m in this season that I have waited so long for: I love our new home, our new neighborhood, my work and my little family (even if my kitten is a jerk). I’m sleeping better, eating better and exercising better than I have in a long time.  So many of the pieces I was waiting to fall into place have come together…and yet it’s funny that we can find ourselves in the middle of the right {now} season, wishing we were in the middle of the next one already.  When will I be traveling the world again? When will my midnight hustle be paying the bills? Etc, etc. There will always be things we want to work on, do, or improve about ourselves and our lives. I’m the kind of person that has so many dreams and ideas that I end up stalling/doubting/pulling myself in a million different directions. I’m still figuring out how to linger in the little moments while imagining the biggest of futures. But really, at the end of the day, you just gotta take a walk and breathe in the season that you’re in.

And when I stop and think about it all, I can’t help but be tremendously thankful for this right {now} season.

And I have to believe that enough of those little moments will usher in the next season in it’s own sweet time.
