I’ve driven by this little museum in Woodland Park too many times to count.  To be honest, I didn’t have high expectations for it, but have always wanted to stick my head in out of curiosity. Mostly because Woodland Park seems a strange place for a Dinosaur Resource Center.

This was one of my favorite summer afternoons to date, and it didn’t go at all like we planned.  In fact, we didn’t even make it inside the museum.

Before heading into the museum, we stopped for lunch and a few beers. There’s a brewery across the street from the resource center, and since we’re slowly working our way through the Beer Drinker’s Guide to Colorado, we thought we’d check Bierwerks off our list. I think some of the best things happen when you are willing to change your plans. We ended up spending the whole afternoon at Bierwerks, wrapped up in great conversations – which I think is one of the better things in life anyway.

So, I can’t tell you anything about the Dinosaur Resource Museum after all. But what I can tell you is that sometimes it’s better to ditch the agenda and let life happen because that’s when the best adventures are made. That’s the best part of traveling, really, is the unplanned surprises – the going with the flow (which is so much easier when you’re “on vacation,” am I right?). Sometimes plans were made to be unmade, by better plans and good beer.

I’ve been wanting to do more fun little projects, so this past weekend I was playing with my tablet and did this quick sketch. A good thought for a Monday morning, I think: Slow + steady.

I am a long distance runner, and when I’m out on the road, it’s all about putting one foot in front of the other. Speed is not my thing, but I can go long just by being unwilling to stop, no matter how slowly I’m going. It’s something I try to apply to other areas of my life as well – just take one little step after another and you’ll end up a lot farther along than you ever thought you would.  Sometimes we sit at the starting line, overwhelmed by the distance we have to cover.  Sometimes we sprint forward and get frustrated or burnt out when we don’t get to the finish as fast we wanted to. But really, that tortoise had the right idea: slow + steady.

Here’s for getting one thing done today! Happy Monday!

When we were in Chicago in August, we got to spend the day sailing with my family.  I’d never been on a sailboat before, and I love the perspective of the skyline from the lake – so the combination of trying new things and enjoying familiar vistas made for a great day.

On days like this one, when you can’t see clear across to Michigan, the lake feels very ocean-like.  The only thing missing is that salty smell in the air (and maybe a few more waves). The water just stretches out as far as you can see.

Ah summertime, these are the glory days – these long, sunny celebrations of warmth before leaves start to change and air gets crisp.  Did you get out to enjoy the last bits of summer over Labor Day weekend?

Today we’re talking packing of the moving variety – because I have just been drowning in it lately. Husband and I have moved up to Denver from the Springs this past weekend. I happen to love the un-packing part of packing, particularly. And this time, for the first time, I’ll be unpacking into a home office! That’s a picture of it, above, along with my first home office purchase that I scored with the help of husband’s student discount at West Elm.

Obviously, I’ve been daydreaming (my heart knows no budget) about what I’m going to be decorating this shiny new office with, and I think at least a few of the below are going to find their way home to me.

Enjoy your long weekend everyone – you know what I’ll be up to…unpacking!

One of our recent trips to attempt a 14er summit got rained out – but the cloud definitely had a silver lining, because we ended up exploring the town of Ouray (pronounced yoo-ray). The city’s tagline is “Switzerland of America” and I kind of fell in love.  I mean, LOOK at this place.

We went on a gorgeous hike (photos of that to come) and then enjoyed brews and views on the rooftop deck of the Ouray Brewery.  Honestly, I had never heard of Ouray until we drove through it – a lot of gems in Colorado get out-shined by the big ones like Telluride and Aspen.  And old mining towns turned tourist destinations are a dime a dozen around here. But I am glad to have discovered Ouray, and I’m already scheming a return. I could sit and look and that pretty little town surrounded by mountains all day.  Plus, we still have to conquer Mt. Sneffels.

P.S. Is that not the funniest mountain name? Mt. Sneffels!
