It’s been hard to get back into the swing of things in the real world this week, and yet life keeps coming at you! So today at my desk, my mind is wandering back to the mountains and a mug of hot chocolate on misty mornings.

It’s time for part two of our adventure around the world with Minted, chatting about travel journals. See the first installment.

Don’t you love the sweet dots on that journal up there? Totally reminded me of traditional aboriginal paintings, but with a modern touch. Perfect match for this week’s destination – Australia!

Australia was one of my favorite places to visit, and while I was there, I kept one of my absolute favorite travel journals of all time. My family lived down under for a time while I was in high school – and so although my travel journal was part of an assignment, I learned some valuable observation skills. For an art class, I had to keep notes on all kinds of design that I found around the country, whether that be fashion, architecture, print, or otherwise. My sketchbook was full of street style and gorgeous buildings by the end of the trip.

These things capture a country to me – the way it creates and lives and moves.  So much more than the “icons” that everyone knows and loves to snap a photo in front of.  I really feel like I learned Australia while I was there, for the time I was there, and continue to use some of the same guidelines for observation in my travel journals today.  Look where other people aren’t looking and you’ll make some pretty awesome discoveries!

When it comes to travel, Australia is where I learned to see.

I’m super excited about this new series that’s going to be running through the month of July! We’re going to be adventuring all over the world and chatting about travel journals.

This week, we’re headed to Aix-en-Provence, a town in the south of France.  In June, this place smells like lavender and heaven (what, you don’t think heaven smells like lavender fields?).  Aix-en-Provence was where I tested out my independent traveler wings, wandering the cobblestone streets on my own and sticking my head into shops and cafés. And it was where I first tasted asparagus with hollandaise sauce. It’s amazing what courage travel will give you – even if it’s just to try a new vegetable in a new city.

Do you keep journals when you travel? They happen to be one of my favorite things, and I have boxes of them from past trips – even one from my first trip to Spain as a 5-year-old. Reading back through them is just like I’m there again.  I wish I was better about the specifics – you know, that exact restaurant and address that you loved.  But I’m not that good at specifics. My travel journals are usually (and have been since the first) full of sketches, little notes about my day, and mostly about how a place made me feel.

Aix-en-Provence made me feel like freedom – there’s something magical about being on your own in a new place, with all this potential to discover – and I’ve been addicted to asparagus and adventure ever since.

An exhibit in Europe, wow Susan that is cool! Congratulations! I haven’t been in a few years, but Southern France in June has to be one of the best things.ReplyCancel

I’m out of the office for the week, adventure-seeking at a campsite in Southwestern Colorado. But heads up – I’ve got some awesome posts lined up for this week to keep you company. Here’s to a bunch of summer fun, friends!

Yup, I have a stamp collection. Moving on…

So for this next installment of AdventureWear, we’re headed to São Tomé, an island off the coast of Africa. This means tropical island inspiration, crossed with African colors and a hint of classy European (did you know they speak Portuguese there?). Perfect for a hot and stylish summer day – even if I’m only in Colorado.

Ok, I’m really loving these AdventureWear posts, even though it’s probably true that only I could get excited about stamp-inspired attire. Where shall we go next?
