{ my feet / seaside }

After the crazy that was last week, I have been intentionally trying to fit more quiet into my day (well, to be honest, I had been trying for the last few weeks of March too – but with not much success).ย  That has meant a few things to me:

1. Getting in some quiet meditation in the morning, usually picking a scripture & some soft music for about 10-15 minutes.

2. Making a little extra time for morning yoga – I’ve found that starting my day with intentional movement is incredibly relaxing.

3. Putting away my phone (as much as possible) when I sit down to dinner, and leaving it out of sight for the rest of the evening.

4. Something chill before bed: a cup of tea, some time at the piano, reading a magazine.

That third one is the hardest ever.ย  I haven’t been perfect at all of these everyday, but I’ve noticed that if I get even two of them right, that my whole day is a bit more peaceful and happy.ย  There are so many forces constantly trying to complicate our lives, I think we should provide at least a few opposing forces that attempt to make our days simpler.ย  And it doesn’t have to be big and complicated – because that’s kind of the point, isn’t it?

When life gets a little crazy, what are somethings you enjoy to incorporate peace & stillness? I’m always looking for new ideas!

Your ideas sound so great. I have a really hard time with the phone thing, too. You know, I actually took Facebook off of my phone and it has done wonders. There are times when I wish I could check messages or hop in if I’m in the waiting room and bored, but seriously, it really doesn’t give me much to use my phone for when it’s not there. So there’s an idea! I’ve also been reading a lot more, and I find that really calms me down. Have you ever read Shauna Niequist’s books? She really inspires me. You might like her stuff!ReplyCancel

Anne, I actually don’t have the Facebook app either – but I do cheat and look it up in the web app :/ I think really the only thing that works for me is putting physical distance between me and my phone. Out of sight, out of mind, right? Thanks so much for the book recommendation – I haven’t heard of her but I am always looking for new books to read.ReplyCancel

Our posts go together so well! ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m hoping to be able to add some light meditation and yoga into my daily routines to help keep myself from stressing too much on the big things this week. Hopefully it really works for both of us! ๐Ÿ™‚ReplyCancel

    • Annabelle MintzApril 4, 2013 - 12:51 pm

Kory – They do! ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve found that the best way to do that is to just start small – at first, I couldn’t make more than 5 minutes happen, but I’ve been slowly adding time as I’ve practiced more. Also helps to have the room to myself and the cat distracted in another part of the house – haha.ReplyCancel

These are all such great ideas! I’m a little partial to the first two especially, but I love that you’re trying to do them in the morning. I usually get around to both in the evenings, at least, but meditation and yoga are such wonderful ways to start the day. ๐Ÿ™‚ReplyCancel

    • Annabelle MintzApril 6, 2013 - 9:46 am

Alyssa – it’s awesome that you are making time for them when you can! But I agree about the mornings – for me it’s easier to start the day on a good note, than to try to get out of a funk once the day is over! That’s why I’m been attempting to change up my morning routine a bit, and this week at least I’d say was a success ๐Ÿ™‚ReplyCancel

Those are great goals. I’m going to try and work some of them into my day tomorrow and see how it goes!ReplyCancel

Thanks for this post Annabelle. Stillness and relaxation continue to be much sought after, slippery, yet oh-so lovely ideals for me.

I often take solace in green: sitting under a tree or on the grass, taking a short walk somewhere serene with a natural view. When escaping the man-made world is just a little too hard, I try to sit quietly for five minutes and look out the window or stare up at the sky for a while.

Regular bath time is my ultimate meditation, although I love a real meditation session too. When life is a bit hectic, sometimes a track with my earphones is enough to help me take a step back. Ignoring facebook and my phone is important, but as you said, difficult. A good book for 15 minutes a day really helps me feel like I’ve escaped for a while.

Keep up the great posts. Love the new site too by the way- very pretty.

      Nic- thank you so much!

Baths are one of my favorite winter-time relaxations, that is a good one, and one that I’d forgotten to mention as my brain is going spring-spring-spring right now ๐Ÿ™‚ And connecting with nature is so important! I definitely try to make that happen as often as possible, and getting back into my regular running routine is helping a lot with that.

So good to hear from you xoReplyCancel

{ sit / sip / style }

I grew up in a neighborhood where all the houses looked a little different – there’s something that I have always loved about the way everything mismatched and yet fit together.ย  This beautiful place in Norway gives me the same comfy vibes, except, of course, it gets bonus points for being in Norway.

My mind is wandering off today to some cozy spring layers, a mug of something hot & caffeinated, and a pretty mismatched neighborhood.

This is the third post I’ve done about wildflowers (minor obsession), check out the others here:ย  Arizona // Alpine

This past weekend, I adventured over to Texas for a weekend of apartment hunting with my sister, who just so happens to be brilliant and will be starting her PhD program at Texas A&M this summer.ย  We flew into Austin (one of my favorite places!) and made the short drive to College Station.

The wildflower gods must really love me, because I seem to always happen upon things in the perfect season.ย  The highway was lined with miles and miles of bluebonnet patches (and several groups doing the Texas thing and getting baby/senior/family/engagement photos taken with these bluebonnet backgrounds all along the highway).

In a few places, the bluebonnets were sharing real estate with pops of orange Indian paintbrushes, and I just about couldn’t get over how pretty everything was.ย  If I really want to stop thinking about moving to Texas, I need to start planning all my visits in August – because I think that’s really the only time of year that might convince me that it would be a bad life choice.

Husband just found today the tiniest of baby buds on the tree outside our window in Colorado – quite the stark contrast to the green upon green that is Texas right now.

I just can’t get enough of spring – but it is forever the temptress of seasons.ย  Today, the clouds hang low with misty white whispers of snow and my mind keeps wandering back to open highways lined with wildflowers.

Sigh.ย  Maybe someday, Texas.

Thank you! Haha I have that weird desire every once in a while, but I always visit in the springtime when it’s definitely the loveliest – that’s probably the issue!ReplyCancel

Lovely. I live in the panhandle and we have completely different wildflowers than Southern Texas. They are the apex when speaking of reasons to love Spring! Thanks for sharing.ReplyCancel

Amber – thanks so much! I’m glad you like them ๐Ÿ™‚ Spring is definitely one of my favorite seasons because of all the blooming plants, and I love how every place is unique!ReplyCancel

Thanks Lilah! I have family in Lubbock, but I haven’t been in a few years. So glad you are loving Texas, it’s one of my favorites too ๐Ÿ™‚ReplyCancel

Thinking about this today as I come back to the fickle & chilly springtime of Colorado after a weekend of lovely weather & time with family in Texas.

If you’re doing it right, you never come home from traveling the same person you left – and I think the familiar surroundings of home are really the only barometer for that change.ย  It’s a great comfort, coming home, but also a great reminder.ย  Travel and change are forever intertwined with one another.

Well, guys, today is the day!

I have a shiny new design AND url! Welcome to the world of self-hosted WordPress – what a journey and a learning curve it has been.

I learned that although I’m the kind of person who wants to wait until PERFECT happens, I also can’t use that as an excuse to cover up any fear about moving forward.ย  So I went 50-50 on this one, and though I was hoping to get both the business site and the new blog up today, I realized that it just was not going to happen.ย  And I’m really ok with it, because some things are more important than being obsessive – like playing the piano for a few hours because you feel like it, or going out and celebrating your birthday because well, it’s your birthday!ย  Not worth all the extra stress to waste your life away on seeking perfect.

So, that being said, if you find any kinks with the new site (because I’m sure there are some – and some details I’m still working on) just be patient as I get them all figured out.

I worked with the awesome Kate of Katelyn Brooke Designs on my logos, so here’s the branding board she sent me!ย  Remember the original mood board I showed you guys?ย  She did such a great job capturing what I was picturing – this thing is my happy place!

So, full disclosure – this is ALMOST the whole branding board.ย  I have a few things up my sleeve, so there’s a little section I kept to myself for now.ย  I want some parts of the new business site to be a surprise!

Also want to give a shout-out to Melissa at Melrose Street Custom Content – who really helped me a ton with what you’ll see on my business site, but also helped me make sure my writing on the About page was all awesome and polished and sans-typo.

Thanks again for being awesome supporters through this whole process.

Happy birthday to me, indeed!
