We’re in early spring now, the last lingering part of this cold, snowy season where it’s just warm enough to be outside again but the threat of another snowstorm still hangs in the air, threatening you. And it’s about this time that I start dreaming of – no, pining for – warmer weather again. Those perfect summer days that go a little like this:

Find some awesome friends to spend time with – they make any day, but especially perfect summer days, better.

Ken Caryl Stream_NeedlesFind a hiking trail with a stream alongside it, + maybe a group of deer to accompany you as well, because you’re feeling particularly like Snow White today.

Try to sing at the deer + have them run away in protest because they don’t want to have to do your chores for you any more than your mother did when you were a kid.

After you return from said beautiful hike, find a soft-serve vanilla ice cream cone + a sunny spot to put your feet up.

Perfect summer day, achieved.

I am probably overly excited to be bringing back one of my favorite series on the blog from a few years back, called AdventureWear. In my younger years, I collected stamps – I love the design, the culture + the history of them, not to mention the memories of snail mail from all parts of the globe. On my bookshelf, you’ll still find my stamp books, organized by continent + then by country.

If you’re anything like me, you have seasons where you’re staring at your closet in the morning wondering, what shall I put on today? So, I thought to myself, what better way to bring my travels into my everyday life than to gather style inspiration from my stamp collection? Thus, AdventureWear was born.

Adventurewear Mar2016_Needles-3

I thought I’d pick an Irish stamp in honor of St. Patrick’s Day + this is one of my favorites. Celtic patterns, a fun color scheme + just enough green. When I saw this dress in my closet, I knew it was the one that would bring the Ireland stamp to life. Aren’t the patterns perfect? We’ve had beautiful weather here in Colorado lately (although spring is usually the snowiest of seasons) so I jumped at the chance to throw on a spring dress + some warmer layers to enjoy the sunshine. I am 100% more likely to wear geometrics than florals, so maybe that’s another reason this particular stamp inspired me. Hooray for postage-inspired style success!

Where do you look for inspiration when you’re in a style rut?

NYC2015_Needles_title

As a native of Chicago, I’m sure it’s fairly obvious that out of all the big cities in this country, New York has never been my favorite. I am staunchly loyal to my roots, + honestly have found New York a little bit overwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had a good time on each + every visit, but I’m always happy to go home.

This trip was a quick weekend adventure, so the bf + I planned to keep things pretty relaxed. We booked a hotel in Midtown, which I vetted from a few selections based on how close they were to an Argo Tea. Priorities. On our first night in New York, we walked to Grand Central Station where we tried Shake Shack for the first time. You know how by the time you got around to watching Napoleon Dynamite after all of your friends had been quoting it for months + it’s not quite as hilarious as you were expecting? It’s like that.

After our quick dinner in Grand Central, we headed to Rockefeller Center, where we had made reservations to go ice skating. It was unseasonably warm that evening, so while we waited for our time slot, we watched the Zamboni push puddles of standing water around the rink. The primary objective of the evening, I decided at that point, was not to fall. It was entirely stereotypical in a New York rom-com way, yet it ended up being my favorite part of the trip, so I’m so glad we splurged for it. And I managed not to fall into any puddles! All those figure skating lessons in elementary school went to good use.

The next day, we hopped on the subway to Battery Park, at the south tip of Manhattan. The bf + I found a bench with a view of the water + the Statue of Liberty, + spent an hour people watching, boat watching + chatting about how our families ended up in America (his, significantly more recently than mine). My dad’s family came over from England before Ellis Island’s immigration offices were even opened, and although I don’t know much about the family history on my mother’s side, when I checked the records online, there were over 8000 people with my mom’s Irish surname that registered there between 1892 and 1954.

We then met up with my oldest friend, Biz, at the newly installed Sea Glass Carousel. She + I went to grade school together + met in third grade on the playground when she invited me to a game of tag. So I suppose it is rather fitting that we met up in New York, almost 20 years into our friendship, to ride a carousel. It was quite unique, with these huge internally lit fish.

The rest of the day (and honestly, the majority of our weekend in general) involved either walking or eating or both. That evening, we wandered out for some cheap slices of pizza in the theater district + a nighttime walk through Time’s Square. According to my Fitbit, we did no less than 5 miles of walking every day that we were in New York. My feet were exhausted by the end of it, but it made me miss my city-living days a little bit. You get accustomed to all the walking, learn to appreciate it + even start to enjoy it.

Met Museum 2015_Needles

Our last day in New York was a pretty perfect fall day. We did plenty of leaf-crunching + exploring in Central Park as we made our way to the Met. As it turns out, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has reciprocity with the Denver Art Museum, of which we are members. So, we got in for FREE! There is something about being a member of an art museum that makes me feel like a real adult (and maybe even a fancy adult). We spent a lot of time lingering around the full-size Egyptian temple in its bright, glass-walled room.

Thus ended our quick weekend in New York City. In Top Gear fashion, we raced back to the hotel – boyfriend went to pick up the rental car from the parking garage where we had stashed it, and I walked back to the hotel to pick up the bags from the bellhop. I won by beating him to the curb with the luggage before he could make it back to the hotel in the car. The outcome of this race proved how glad I was to have stashed the car for the weekend + not messed with it during our stay.

Poor New York. Despite all the fun we had, it will never have my heart the way that Chicago does (or even Denver for that matter, which feels like home now). Although, it is certainly not without its charms.

Are you an NYC lover? What’s your favorite thing about the city?

Another month has gone by, which means another 29 seconds of my Project 365 are behind us (in case you missed it – check out January’s recap). February’s video gets a whole extra second, thanks to the leap year! I don’t know about you, but I was so excited about having an additional day in 2016 + I spent nearly the entirety of it at my computer working on a deadline. Whomp, whomp.

Thankfully, I was able to sneak away for an hour-long walk through my neighborhood (when I took my 1 second of video) to make the most of the unusually warm weather. I’m still working on getting into the habit of this daily video taking – especially on the days that I’m at my computer all day. It’s a reality of entrepreneurship that you spend a lot of time staring at a screen, but that doesn’t make for a very compelling video, does it? It’s been a fun task to try to see those routine days in a unique way, or encourage myself to take breaks from the computer – even if it’s just for a walk around the neighborhood. Good for my Project 365, likely good for my health as well. It’s a win-win!

Despite the inevitable computer-staring, February included lots of goodness:

Three weekends spent in the mountains, a trip to Louisville, Kentucky + Nashville, Tennessee, a Superbowl parade for the Broncos – plus hiking, bowling, neighborhood walks + coffee shops galore.

What are your highlights from the last month?

StMarys2015_Needles-title

About a 45-minute drive from Denver, you can find a perennial snowfield called St. Mary’s Glacier. Over the summer, my friends + I decided to make the easy .75 mile hike up to the glacier + its accompanying lake for a little cliff jumping. The hike, while short, was moderately steep, but we were rewarded with stunning views. Crazy amounts of wildflowers lined the trail, both near the glacier + the cliff jumping spots. We even saw some people hiking in with their skis so they could ride down the snow field – pretty crazy for July, but hey, this is Colorado!

Those of us who were cliff jumping just wore swimsuits under our hiking clothes + packed towels with us. Several height options exist for the actual jumping, depending on your level of daring/bravery. I jumped from the lowest ledge, but it was still about 15 to 20 feet. Although, I’ll admit that when I was standing there on the edge it may as well have been 100 feet! I’ve always been a nervous jumper.

I remember during a trip to Cuenca during my study abroad trip in college, we were given the option of cliff jumping as an alternative to horseback riding. Making the decision to jump then has become one of my favorite travel memories, + maybe even one of my proudest moments of all time (refer back to the nervous jumper note above). So of course, with that in mind, I had to go for it.

StMarys2015_Needles-7

The most intense part was definitely the shock from hitting the icy water – it is snow melt, after all. Once I recovered from the cold shock, it was a short swim back to shore. Overall, I can see why this hike is so popular: the stunning views, the short drive from Denver, the manageable trail length + the combination of outdoorsy things you can do there all add up to make it a winner. Hiking, camping, skiing, rock climbing + cliff jumping were all represented and it was mid-July!

And you know, sometimes you just need to jump off of a cliff!

The reservoir is extremely low!! Cliff jumping is dangerous! A guy broke his ankle today while we were jumping. Watching go pro videos of our jumps the boulder is on the right side so jump left if you go!!ReplyCancel

Oh wow, J! That’s crazy! We went jumping in 2015 so the water levels must have been different. Thanks for the heads up 🙂ReplyCancel
